Description

Strategies on how industry and public authorities can act towards Open Source communities and vice versa shall ensure a win-win situation for both sides. They enable cooperation in the development of Open Source.

Building on strategic modelling theories we derived considerations and an analysis of gaps and necessities of the FLOSS sector.
During this work, several strategies for industry and Open Source communities were identified and matched with their related business models. In doing this, based on a possible future vision of the FLOSS world, a mapping of probable business and practical needs that each identified strategy may entail, has been designed. Psychological aspects and different interests between big industry, small industry, and Open Source communities have been also taken into account.

Finally, for the each of these strategies a set of tactics and actions that defines them, success factors, pitfalls and current examples are described.

Learned lessons

We have learned that there are many ways of building business around FLOSS and all of them valid. There are not dogmatims, just best practices. FLOSS strategies depend on what is the market objective, the cimcurstances and the environment. Industry is really concerned about taking advantage of FLOSS and it is trying to adapt traditional FLOSS models to their own business. There is no choice: both worlds need each other and must find a point in the path where to join for benefit of both.

Maturity Level (1-5)

The overall matutiry of the work on strategies is between 3 and 4. This work was produced during the project duration, but it should be updated regularly even after the end of the project. For this we encourage all interested people and organisations to take initiative.
